Two Things at the Same Time As we begin ICPS training, we concentrate on learning vocabulary which can be useful for problem solving. Using these same words and concepts at home reinforces your child's learning and can help parents begin to implement ICPS ideas in conflict situations. Here we can use the words same and different to redirect a child's inappropriate choice. As an example, talk to your child about 'what if' situations. You could posit a situation where a mom is trying to talk on the phone and the child keeps trying to get her attention. Ask your child: "Can the mom talk on the phone and talk to the child at the same time?" Say: "Maybe the Mom will be finished with her phone call soon. She might be annoyed if the child keeps trying to talk to her. Can you think of something different the child can do while she is waiting for her mom to finish?" Try to avoid praising specific ideas your child might offer. Instead it is better to reinforce the act of thinking. You might say, "You thought of 5 different things she could do, good thinking!" |
